亞硫酸鈉用于攝影行業，以保護顯影液不被氧化；在紙漿和造紙行業；在水處理中作為除氧劑，在皮革工業中作為脫硫脫氯劑，在紡織工業中作為漂白劑。它用作防腐劑以防止干果變色。它在化學工業中用作磺化劑和磺甲基化劑。它參與硫代硫酸鈉的生產。其他應用包括第四浮選礦石、采油和染料制造。
